Maj. Gen. Zaw Min Tun, leader of the National Defense and Security Council (NDSC) information team, said that there were no Tatmadaw or security forces on the eastern side of the Mayu River when the Htan Shout Khan village incident occurred.
Maj. Gen. Zaw Min Tun made the remarks while speaking about the genocide committed by AA (Arakan Army) militants against more than 600 local Bengali villagers from Htan Shout Khan village, Awin Ngat Thay village tract, Buthidaung Township.
The AA began attacking a local security camp in Buthidaung Township on March 22, 2024, and then surrounded and attacked other security camps. Since then, troops from security camps on the eastern side of the Mayu River have been unable to leave the camp, said Maj. Gen. Zaw Min Tun.
“The incident occurred on May 2, 2024, when the AA terrorist insurgents occupied the area command headquarters. Therefore, at the time of the Htan Shout Khan village incident, there were no security personnel from the Myanmar Army and Myanmar Police Force on the eastern side of the Mayu River. The AA terrorist insurgents initially denied that the Tatmadaw had done anything. Later, they claimed that the bodies were from the army. If we look at the inconsistencies in their statements, it is even more obvious that the AA terrorist insurgents committed genocide against the local Bengalis. Even more obvious evidence is that many women and children were among the mass deaths,” said Maj. Gen. Zaw Min Tun.
He said that the AA began attacking security posts and towns/villages in Rakhine State on November 13, 2023. As fighting broke out in towns and villages in northern Rakhine State, locals who wanted peace and stability in the region held peaceful protests to express their disapproval of the AA insurgents.
“On March 19, 2024, at 3 pm, more than 2,000 Bengalis in the villages of Buthidaung Township held a demonstration demanding regional peace and stability; on March 21, 2024, Bengalis in Aung Mingalar, Kathe, and Thandaw Ni wards of Sittwe city held a demonstration demanding regional peace and stability; on March 23, 2024, Bengalis in Bu May Village and Basara Village of Sittwe city held a demonstration demanding regional peace and stability; and on April 20, 2024, Bengalis in Bu May Village and surrounding villages of Sittwe Township held a demonstration demanding that the AA insurgents who are waging war in the towns and villages of Rakhine State do not want them,” said Maj. Gen. Zaw Min Tun.
He said that on the evening of May 4, 2024, Bengali people in the urban areas of Buthidaung, who wanted peace and stability in the region, demonstrated against the violent actions of the AA terrorist group and expressed their complete rejection of them.
“The last remaining security forces of the Tatmadaw withdrew from Buthidaung town in the early morning of May 14, 2024. Following this withdrawal, at around 9 pm on May 16, AA militants entered Buthidaung town and threatened the Bengalis with ‘burning if you don’t come out of your houses,’ and according to local ethnic groups, including local Bengalis, they started burning houses in 7 wards of Buthidaung town and Kyin Latt village. On May 17, 2024, AA militants used drones to bomb a school in Buthidaung town, injuring nearly 200 local Bengalis who had sought refuge from Kan Pyin, Zaw Baw, Ka Kyat Bat, Myaung Nar, A Lal Chaung, Kon Tai Bakon Nar, Bakon Nar Taung village, Letwe Dak and Yet Nyo Taung villages,” said Maj. Gen. Zaw Min Tun.
Maj Gen. Zaw Min Tun also said that the AA, which harboured hatred towards the Bengalis and put racial hatred at the forefront, carried out the unlawful mass killing and burning of innocent locals in Htan Shout Khan village because the Bengalis living in the towns and villages of northern Rakhine State wanted peace and stability in the region and protested against the AA's actions.
“The AA terrorists have been known to carry out a series of senseless killings against the Bengalis during the fighting in Rakhine State. Another such attack that killed hundreds of Bengalis was on August 5, 2024, when the AA terrorists continuously dropped bombs and drones on the Bengalis waiting for boats to escape the war on the banks of the Nat River west of Maungdaw town, killing more than 200 Bengalis,” he said. –
