The No. (2) Steel Mill (Pinpet) in southern Shan State’s Taunggyi Township is on track for completion by the end of 2027, according to an insider source cited by The Statesman journal.
Following diplomatic discussions with Russia, the previously stalled No. (2) Steel Mill (Pinpet) resumed operations. The project is now in the preparatory phase for pig iron manufacturing. Out of the 22 total workshops (Pinpet) on-site, the vast majority—19 in total—have already undergone testing to ensure operational readiness.
The Pinpet Steel Mill is entering its final development stage, with the three workshops being completed in collaboration with a Russian firm. The plant is expected to commence production by November 2027, aiming for a yearly output of 200,000 tonnes of pig iron to bolster the domestic industry.
The source said, "We're continuing discussions and implementation on the remaining components, targeting project completion around November 2027. That's when we'll begin producing pig iron. The remaining three units are already installed, and we're now handling the last installation work."
For the operation of the Pinpet factory, Mining Enterprise No. 1 has already obtained permission to extract and produce the necessary raw materials—two types of iron ore, limestone, dolomite, and coal—in accordance with natural resource and environmental conservation regulations. It has also been learned that tenders will be called for sand.
It is further understood that the obtained pig iron can be utilized in iron smelting operations and the steel production processes at the Myingyan Steel Mill No. 1, up to a certain percentage.
The Pinpet site covers an area of approximately 5,122.16 acres. While the development was initially slated for completion during the 2022–2023 fiscal cycle, various complications led to a series of delays. –
