Suspects arrested for theft of gold, cash worth over 400 million kyats in Mandalay’s Chanayethazan

According to a statement released by the State Administration Council (SAC), a man who stole over 400 million kyats worth of gold items and cash stored in a mezzanine inside an apartment in Chanayethazan Township, Mandalay Region, was arrested along with four others who helped conceal the stolen items.
On April 18, Daw Khin Phyu Myint, a resident of a ground-floor apartment on 32(B) Street between 70th and 71st Streets in Yadanar Myaing Ward, Chanayethazan Township, was storing 200 million kyats in cash inside a plastic bag and various gold items worth 235.4 million kyats inside a backpack on a mezzanine in her apartment, according to reports.
According to the complaint, a total of 435.4 million kyats’ worth of cash and gold items went missing. In response, Chanayethazan Township’s No. (3) Police Station opened a case under Penal Code Section 380 for theft and launched an investigation to apprehend the perpetrator.
As a result, authorities carried out intelligence gathering and investigation efforts to apprehend the perpetrators. On April 26, they conducted a search and arrested the suspect, Lwin Ko Oo (age 27), at his residence in Lat Pan Village, Tatkon Township, Naypyidaw.
During the search, only Lwin Ko Oo’s wife, Thin Thin Soe (age 26), was found at the residence. According to her statement, Lwin Ko Oo had used the stolen money on April 19 to purchase a black KENBO 125 motorcycle in Tatkon. The remaining stolen cash and gold items were reportedly packed in a plastic sack and brought back to their home in Lat Pan Village.
Additionally, on April 21, it was discovered that Thin Thin Soe's father, Myint Naing, her sister Phyo Phyo, and her brother-in-law Kyaw Kyaw Khine (aka) Kyaw Khine had buried and concealed the stolen items in a hole on a mountain about one mile west of the village. This information was confirmed during the investigation, according to the SAC statement.
According to additional statements made by Thin Thin Soe, on April 26, a total of 140 million kyats and gold items weighing over 9 ticals were seized during the investigation.
According to statements made by the criminal, Lwin Ko Oo, starting from November 2024, he began working at a construction site in Mandalay. On April 18, at around 8:00 am, he entered the apartment unit on the ground floor, room number (B-1), of a seven-story building located near his workplace and stole money and gold items.
It is understood that he then traveled back to Tatkon and instructed his wife to hide and store the stolen money and gold items.
The suspects, Lwin Ko Oo, who committed the theft by entering the residence and stealing the money and gold items, as well as Thin Thin Soe and others, who helped conceal and store the stolen items, are being pursued for effective legal action according to the law, as stated by the SAC.
