Myanmar has expressed its intention to participate in the activities of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) as an observer. This announcement was made by Prime Minister Min Aung Hlaing, chairman of the State Administration Council (SAC) on June 26 during the plenary session of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council.
In addition, SAC Chairman emphasized the country's commitment to strengthening economic and trade relations with EAEU member states.
“Myanmar is deeply interested in the activities and initiatives of the EAEU and intends to expand cooperation. We intend to further expand the potential of cooperation with the EAEU member states in economy and trade. In the current international environment, which is fraught with numerous challenges, our common task is to act effectively to overcome emerging threats. Despite external economic challenges and sanctions, the EAEU has shown steady progress and achieved significant results in recent years. Let me express my sincere request to support Myanmar’s intention to join the EAEU as an observer state,” he said.
The Europe-Asia Economic Forum has been held annually since 2022, hosted by the current rotating chair of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). The forum aims to promote deeper economic integration and cooperation across the Europe-Asia region, with pre-determined discussion topics aligned to this objective. The inaugural forum was held in 2022 in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, followed by the second in 2023 in Moscow, Russia, and the third in 2024 in Yerevan, Armenia. The fourth edition, EEF 2025, is currently underway in Minsk, Belarus, attracting over 2,700 participants from 33 countries. The event includes plenary sessions, roundtable discussions, and business meetings throughout its duration.
At this year’s 4th Europe-Asia Economic Forum, Myanmar’s Chairman of the SAC took part in a plenary session. Additionally, Union Minister for Investment and Foreign Economic Relations Dr. Kan Zaw joined the morning session focused on migration, multimodal transport, and digital transformation strategies aimed at building a sustainable and long-term transportation network in the region. In the afternoon, Deputy Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation Dr. Aung Gyi contributed to discussions on strengthening cooperation within the EAEU for the effective development of the agricultural sector. –
