Although Loikaw has previously experienced partial control by armed groups among the state and regional capitals, the Kayah State Hluttaw building and its facilities are reportedly ready for the upcoming post-election period, according to information obtained by The Statesman Journal.
Kayah rebels launched a campaign to control Loikaw in November 2023, and were able to control some wards, including the Loikaw University and Naung Yar, but were forced to retreat due to counterattacks by the Tatmadaw.
During their attack, the Kayah armed forces not only attacked the Loikaw University, which was not a military target, but also forcibly arrested and detained 132 teachers and academic staff, including the rector, and 64 family members, a total of 196 people, and students.
Furthermore, after they were forced to retreat, they continued to lay mines in the areas where they had taken refuge.
Since then, the central and state governments have been working hard to restore the city, and the city has returned to normal. In addition, the Tatmadaw is also achieving success in counter-offensives in areas controlled by armed groups from Kayah State.
Regarding the Kayah State Hluttaw building, information obtained from local residents indicates that although the building was hit by artillery shells, it was not seriously damaged.
“It is said that only minor damage was caused by small weapons. We know that everything is ready to run the Hluttaw. We know that they have all necessary equipment for the Hluttaw. Therefore, the Kayah State Hluttaw is ready to convene after the election,” said a person familiar with the matter.
According to an announcement from the Union Election Commission, the first phase of the multi-party general election will be held on December 28, and it will include Loikaw and Bawlakhe in Kayah State. –
