The Border Guard Force (BGF) of Kayin State has announced its full support and cooperation for Myanmar’s upcoming general election scheduled for December 2025, in what is being seen as a significant move toward ensuring political stability in the region.
In an official press release, the BGF stated, “It is understood that the election to be held in December 2025 is crucial for Myanmar's future, aiming to establish a democratic system and create a stable, peaceful, and secure life for all citizens. The Border Guard Force (Karen State) will fully cooperate in this upcoming election without discrimination against any political party.”
The BGF emphasized its commitment to providing fair and impartial support throughout the electoral process. The statement further highlighted the group's intention to prioritize the safety and security of voters, ensuring they are able to cast their ballots without fear or intimidation.
This development comes amid tensions in the region, as the Karen National Union (KNU), designated a terrorist organization by the government on August 28 due to ongoing armed conflicts, has openly declared its opposition to elections organized by the Tatmadaw. Similarly, some members of the Democratic Karen Benevolent Army (DKBA) have also expressed dissent regarding the upcoming polls.
However, it is understood that the BGF, aligning itself with the interests of the people, has no intention of obstructing or disrupting the election, in order to allow citizens to live peacefully and securely.
“Everyone says they don’t like dictatorship. We feel the same way. If we truly don’t want a dictatorship, we need to accept this election. Only then can we move toward a government chosen by the people, step by step. If we’re not satisfied later, we can vote again. If the system is allowed to evolve on its own, the ongoing armed conflicts we’re facing could also come to an end,” said BGF Deputy Commander Nai Maung Zaw.
As Myanmar approaches a pivotal electoral moment, the BGF’s proactive stance is being regarded as a positive development in efforts to maintain peace and inclusivity in Kayin State. Their assurance of non-partisan cooperation and commitment to voter safety marks a hopeful step forward for the democratic process in one of the sensitive regions in Myanmar.
