The construction of the Yangon elevated expressway and Yangon outer ring road projects is part of the future plans, U Wunna Zaw, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Construction, told The Statesman.
The Yangon elevated expressway and Yangon outer ring road project steering committee has been formed to facilitate connectivity between industrial zones, seaports, dry ports, new cities, and logistic routes, and to emerge as a major economic corridor for the country.
The Union Minister for Construction will serve as chairman of the project steering committee, with the Chief Minister of Yangon Region, the Deputy Ministers for Transport and Communications, Finance and Revenue, and Electric Power as members, and the Deputy Minister for Construction will serve as the secretary, according to the State Gazette.
“The main point is that, when traffic congestion increases, many major cities around the world adopt this kind of solution. Such measures are implemented only when traffic becomes heavily congested. It’s not something that will be carried out immediately. It’s more of a plan prepared to address future challenges,” said U Wunna Zaw.
The Yangon elevated expressway and Yangon outer ring road project steering committee has seven responsibilities, including identifying alignments of expressways that will benefit social and economic development in connection with this expressway and outer ring road.
In addition, it includes coordination between relevant ministries, organizations, and regional governments to develop industrial zones, logistic hubs, dry ports, harbours, and satellite towns that will emerge along the Yangon elevated expressway and Yangon outer ring road.
Investments in the Yangon elevated expressway and Yangon outer ring road will be implemented through the Public Private Partnership (PPP) system, based on the lowest budget utilization. Implementation of this system will be carried out in accordance with the tender procedures issued by the former State Administration Council Office.
