A huge natural gas deposit has been identified offshore Myanmar, with an estimated potential recoverable amount of 94.6 trillion cubic feet (TCF).
According to information reported on upstreamonline.com last October, the gas area could become the largest offshore gas field ever discovered in Myanmar.
The gas prospect is located in offshore Block M-15, and drilling of three new wells is expected to begin in September 2026, with the first gas expected to be produced by the end of 2027, Mr. Songning Shen, Chairman of Singapore-based Canadian Foresight Group (CFG), which has signed a Production Sharing Contract (PSC) with Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise (MOGE) in the block, confirmed to upstreamonline.
If confirmed by seismic measurements, the M-15 block would be one of the most significant energy discoveries in the world, the second largest after Guyana, the report said.
Additionally, the source rock discovered in the M-15 block is said to be about 30 times larger than that in the Bohai Gulf, China, which produces about 40 million tonnes of crude oil per year (about 300 million barrels of oil).
India recently announced the discovery of hydrocarbons in the Andaman Sea, within Indian territorial waters, 60 km west of the M-15 block. The natural gas to be produced is estimated to contain 87 percent methane, which could be enough to meet India's energy needs. The area shares a similar geological profile to the Myanmar’s M-15 block, the upstreamonline report said.
According to the CFG company, its operations prioritize only the interests of the people of Myanmar, and the M-15 block project will become Myanmar’s first offshore deep- water project. If it succeeds, CFG says it will contribute to social and economic development in the country.
The company's statement also said that the natural gas produced will be transported and distributed using the currently constructed pipelines and oil refineries. In the long term, the company will focus on producing and distributing LNG around the Strait of Malacca. –
